Installing Windows 2000 Server (edited old WinNT steps to match W2000)
Before you start on a machine (esp Win98 or Workstation) get the names of the video display adapter and the network adapter (with current IP address if assigned), so we can install the right drivers later.
If necessary, install a Matrox Millenium display adapter and NetGear NIC.
Windows 2000 Server:
- Launch the Windows 2000 Server CD-ROM
- Choose an NTFS partition to install (If it is FAT, delete and create NTFS)
- Upgrade or Install - choose INSTALL new copy
- It will ask for NT Server CD-ROM
- Licensing; Choose per server, 5 concurrent connections
- Type of server: Stand-alone server (not a primary/secondary domain server)
- Emergency repair disk? NO
- Choose all language character sets
- Setup Wizard
- installs devices, KB and mouse
- Detects more display adapters, NICs
- Network adapter (NIC) - assign IP, subnet 255.255.255.0, gateway, DNS
- Date/Time - GMT -0500 Eastern U.S.
Changes from Windows NT Server
- Services - not a Control Panel > Computer Management (new Indexing Services)
- SMTP Server, Index Server - not in Services, in MMC (Internet Information Services)
- Telnet Server! tell Derek
- New MMC version of DNS Manager - harder to use? (A > Hosts, CNAME > Aliases)
- Network - not a Control Panel > under Settings
Changes in IIS 5.0
- Buffer On = True (by default - all our pages change)
- Expire Content checkbox
- IsClientConnected
- SiteServer Express documentation only available if upgraded from NT OpPak 4
- Powerful SSL - SQL Server
